Yau-Man ChanThe Edmonton Chinese Lions Club (ECLC) was honoured to have Yau-Man Chan, the popular Survivor Fiji contestant to Edmonton to speak on What can we learn from Survivor? in support of the Youth Emergency Shelter Society (YESS) and the Edmonton Chinese Lions Club charitable organization.

Yau Man's stay in Edmonton was short and tightly-scheduled. He arrived in Edmonton on the evening of Thursday, October 18, 2007 and headed directly to his hotel to have a good night's rest before a busy schedule ahead of him with reporters and sponsors.

Yau-Man Chan & Mike SobelOn Friday, October 19 he started his day with an interview with Mike Sobel from Global TV in the Global Early Morning news.

Meeting with YESS staffHe was then off to World FM radio station for two interviews: one in English and one in Cantonese. Later he met with sponsors and the early bird winners, as well as YESS staff and ECLC committee members for a great lunch buffet hosted by YESS. After lunch he toured the YESS facility.

NAIT Shaw TheatreOn Saturday, October 20, Yau Man arrived at NAIT Shaw Theatre in the morning to prepare for the two shows. The afternoon show was from 2pm – 5pm and the evening one from 7pm – 10pm. Both shows were well-attended and his talk was well presented: a layman’s view, with insider knowledge of how the nastiness of contestants is a mirror on our society. He provided audiences with background information on how Survivor was filmed, tips on how to “stay on” without being voted out, as well as inside stories on Survivor that were not revealed on the show.

During his talk, Yau Man had showed and explained clips from Survivor Fiji. His sense of humor and his enthusiasm lightened the crowd. Those who were not initially his fans became ones by the end of the session. According to Jeff Probst, host of the Survivor series, Yau Man is one of the all-time favourites on the show. He was extremely popular with the Survivor audience because of his wisdom, principles, integrity and authenticity. That was also the reason he received a standing ovation from the audience at the end of his speeches.

Yau Man has donated his time and money to many charitable organizations. As a testimonial to his popularity, many Yau Man websites and even Yau Man fan clubs on Facebook exist.

The Edmonton Chinese Lions Club (ECLC) would like to thank all the volunteers from YESS and Omega Achievers Leos club, and ECLC. Without volunteers, this event will not have been this successful! ECLC would also like to thank all sponsors and attendees for their support.
